CHAPTER 5

DRAKE

As much as I know I should, I can’t refuse the gift straight out. Not only would that seem strange, but worse, I would appear ungrateful. Harry was one of my father’s best friends for as long as I can remember. The joyful look on his face is almost too much to bear. No one, including myself, ever saw me getting married. My work is my life. At least it always has been, but dammit if Joey isn’t riling me up like no woman ever has. Her lips had me hard as a rock, pulsing against my zipper. Now I’m supposed to share a hotel room with her? Lord, give me strength.

The hotel is downtown near City Hall, so we don’t have to go far. Joey doesn’t say a word from the time we sneak out the back entrance—something I wish I would’ve known about ahead of time—up until the time we checked into the Four Seasons. I can’t say I blame her. This was my idea and I can’t think of anything to say either.

“We don’t have to do this, you know.” Joey finally breaks the silence as the elevator dings and we both step inside.

“I know Joey, but something’s telling me that it’s our best shot at pulling this off without anyone questioning my motive for marriage.”

“Your motives aren’t part of the agreement.” My head snaps in her direction. “Not legally, anyway.” Being in this tight space with her has my heart pumping. If she were really my wife, I’d throw her up against the wall, work my way up her skirt and into her panties before she even realized what was happening. “Can I ask you something?”

I adjust my stance, rock hard from my quick but satisfying fantasy. “Sure.”

“Why didn’t you just fess up and tell your godfather about the will?”

Partly because I was enjoying the charade. Even though it was fake, Joey standing next to me gave me a sense of peace I haven’t felt since my mother was around, but there’s more to it than that. “My father,” the elevator dings and the doors open at the Penthouse level. “He never told me he was proud of me.” I extend my hand and Joey takes the invitation, leading us out of the elevator.

We hang a left, our shoes swishing against the carpet before Joey responds. “Never?”

I shake my head, emotion rising in the back of my throat as I insert the key card into the electronic lock. “Not even once.” The light beams red. I try it again, same thing. “When Harry said he thought my father would be proud, I couldn’t bring myself to tell him the truth. It would’ve nulled the sentiment.”

“Let me try.” Joey gently takes the keycard from me, slides it into the reader, and the green light appears. My nostrils flare as I attempt to regain my composure. Joey turns the handle and we enter the suite.

With the flick of a switch, the place is illuminated. “Holy fucking shit.” Joey slaps a hand over her mouth.
